The Alaska Pipeline

The first oil flowed into Pump Station No. 1 at Prudhoe Bay, the morning of June 20, 1977
It is an 800.3 mile trip from Prudhoe Bay to Valdez.
The pipeline was built only 9 years after Arco and Humble Oil and Refining Co. announced the discovery of oil at Prudhoe Bay.
Since it started pumping oil, over 11.5 billion barrels have been moved through the pipe.
Oil arrived at the Valdez Marine Terminal on July 28 - about a month behind schedule due to leaks and other delays.
It took two and a half years to build, and is credited with crossing some of the most incredible terrain on the planet.
After acquiring the necessary 1,347 federal and state permits, Alyeksa (employing 70,000 workers) spent $ 8,000,000,000 to build the pipleine which spans over and under more than 800 rivers and streams.
The pipes highest elevation is 4,739 feet at Atigun Pass.
There are 12 pump stations keeping the oil flowing through the 48 inch diameter pipe.
More than 100,000 pieces were taken to make the pipeline.
Construction accidents killed 31 people assigned to the project.
The Smithsonian Institution is marking the 20th anniversary with an exhibit of pipeline artifacts.
Though the museum and pipeline are the most popular attractions in the state, here are a few photos of other neat things to see around Alaska.
