Choosing the Right Place to Stay Means Asking the Right
Questions.
Every Host has a unique personality. So does every guest.
Staying in an Inn, Lodge, or Bed and Breakfast is certainly a memorable
experience. The question is whether your memories will be fond and fuzzy
treasures or the story line for National Lampoons' next Vacation Movie.
To making sure you have the first encounter rather than the second match
your needs with your hosts offerings. The following list will help you
find the best accommodations for your vacation.
Price-- First and foremost. there are literally hundreds of places
to hang your hat for the night in Alaska. Before you make any
reservations decide weather you need a cheap place to sleep while you
back pack across the country or a luxurious resort to celebrate your
honeymoon.
Number of rooms-- In general the number of rooms will vary between
1 and 9. Small lodgings usually offer the most intimate contact with
your host. Medium sized lodgings give you the choice of meeting other
guests but not always a choice of the guests you meet. Larger
accommodations allow you to be less conspicuous while still offering cozy
surroundings.
Type of food-- Do you want to be served a leisurely gourmet brunch
or are you looking for a doughnut and cup of coffee so you can start
your day
Style of decor-- Victorian? Tudor? Post Modern Disney? It's up to
you.
For Families or Couples-- Do you want to be pestered by screaming
rug rats while your on your honeymoon? Do you want your screaming rug
rats to be pestering honeymooners? Most inns are very specific about
their policy regarding children.
Smoking-- If you are a chain smoker you don't want to be annoyed
by the stifling fresh air of a non smoking inn. Similarly, many guests
and Innkeepers insist upon a smoke-free environment. Other
accommodations offer separate smoking areas. This can be an issue that
offends people on both sides of the coin so it's best to know what to
expect.
Pets-- They can be the life of the house. Or a miserable night of
itching eyes and runny noses. Some hosts don't allow pets. Others have
pets of their own.
Amenities-- These vary from free canoes to indoor plumbing.
Laundry facilities, refrigerators, phones and hot tubs are also worth
finding out about.
Location-- Do you want to get away from it all and enjoy the vast
wilderness or do you want be at located in the center of the action.
This may be second most important question you ask.
