CD Art .....Currently I am working on a very exciting personal project: Theatrical Lighting Design Interactive.

..... An interactive training tool which will cover all the various aspects of theatrical lighting design. This computer-based training program will be available on CD-ROM and is being developed to work cross-platform on MACs and PCs. I believe this CD is a sample of the "textbook of the future". I started this project because I wanted to develop a textbook for my students that would be a solid instruction tool, one that would also be useful for them in the future.

Subject:

..... Lighting Design targeted towards theatre, but whose contents could be applied for dance, television, video and other mediums. The CD will be a "stand alone" product that needs no other materials, save the possibility for play selections that an instructor may use as design projects in his/her class.

Target Audience:

..... Collegiate level students, sophomores through second year graduate-level students, possibly for advanced high school students. The focus is primarily for students studying theatre, journalism-broadcasting, film, and design for dance. Designed as a complete introduction, there are no prerequisites required for these classes, though a basic knowledge of theatre, dance or film is "normal" for students interested in this subject.

Timeliness & Approach:

..... The time for interactive learning tools has come. With such things as "attention deficit disorder", this multimedia approach of using text, audio and many graphics – in addition to interactivity, makes this type of project extremely timely and important. By using multimedia, the CD can help students who are more visually attuned (including a large percentage of design students) understand concepts and information that they normally have a hard time "visualizing".

..... The interactive approach also allows students to work at their own pace, easily repeating specific areas of interest if they choose. It enables them to focus more on the material because they help "make it happen".

Technologies:

..... The project will make use of audio, video, heavy graphics and animation. The use of any additional technology will best get an idea or concept across can be used to supplement the content.

Features:

..... Using multimedia, the CD is easier to understand for students that are not always the best at following texts. Because it is a computer – based tool, there can be an extraordinary use of color graphics for examples that are cost prohibitive in a traditional textbook.

..... I believe my CD will be able to integrate equipment and design together to give a better understanding of what lighting design is and entails. The visual demonstrations and interactive light lab will give students a better understanding of lighting than they have ever been able to achieve before using just a textbook. I also believe the CD will be of interest to select people not enrolled in an official class but are interested in learning more about lighting, and the CD would be a perfect companion for offering a Lighting Design course via "distance delivery" on the World Wide Web.
